The Burglar Who Smelled Smoke by Lawrence Block

Wednesday, February 7th, 2007

If you like reading mysteries by Lawrence Block, you will enjoy reading this short story. Bernie Rhodenbarr is featured in The Burglar Who Smelled Smoke. This was a great short story. He went to Karl Bellerman’s house to do some business. He visited with Karl and his wife for awhile, and then Karl showed Bernie his library, which was stocked with a lot of books and in a locked room where nobody could enter if the room was locked on the inside. At 1:00, Karl said he had to go to his library to be alone with his books. Bernie told him he was already in his library, but Karl said he had to be alone. Karl wanted Bernie to leave the room and spend time doing what he wanted to until he returned from being alone with his books. Then, he would talk business. They were also going to eat supper. Karl’s wife, Eva, showed Bernie to the guest bedroom upstairs where some more books were located that he could read while Karl was occupied with his books. Eva returned with some coffee and cookies for him. However, she didn’t leave the room.

When it was about time for Karl to come out of his room, they went to the library. Karl had not come out of his library. Eva began to worry. She wanted to call the police because she couldn’t get inside the room. Bernie didn’t want her to call the police. The problem was the locked room, and they couldn’t get inside, or could Bernie somehow get inside? You’ll have to read the rest of the story to find out what happened.

The Burglar Who Dropped In On Elvis by Lawrence Block

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

Have you read any of Lawrence Block’s short stories? If not, you will enjoy reading this short story, The Blurglar Who Dropped In On Elvis. It is in the anthology, The Collected Short Mysteries by Lawrence Block.

I enjoyed reading this short story. Bernie was hired to go to Graceland and sneak into Elvis’ bedroom and take infrared pictures so people would see what his bedroom was like. Nobody has ever seen Elvis’ bedroom because it was upstairs and off limits to the public.

Bernie had to hire different people to help him enter the room without anyone seeing him. He also had to hire a helicopter to hover over the rooftop of Elvis’ home.

You’ll have to read the rest of the story to find out what happens.
